  • Waiting For Juniper To Make a Move
Posted by techstockradar on November 17th, 2009 at 9:21 am, Comments: 0

Back in April 2005, $JNPR made a big splash in WAN optimization when it paid $337 million in cash and stock for Peribit Networks. But $JNPR stumbled and wasn’t able to maintain sales momentum for Peribit’s product line. Today it’s a marginalized player in this growing networking segment. On a recent $RVBD earnings call, management [...]

  • Clash of the Networking Titans – What’s Next for $HPQ?
Posted by Chris Selland on November 12th, 2009 at 2:04 pm, Comments: 0

Not surprisingly, there’s a lot of interest and speculation in what happens next after the $HPQ acquisition of $COMS. First of all, yes of course $HPQ is going after $CSCO (who isn’t these days?) – but as usually happens when the leader gets attacked, I expect the damage, at least in the near-term, to be [...]

  • Today’s Deals Extend – Will Tomorrow’s Expand?
Posted by Chris Selland on November 9th, 2009 at 4:31 pm, Comments: 0

As I (and many others) have been speculating, Tech M&A is most definitely back. $GOOG is, as expected, very active, acquiring mobile advertising provider AdMob for $750M as well as Voice over IP (VoIP) provider Gizmo5 for $30M.  Neither acquisition opens up any new markets for the company, but deepens and doubles down their presence in mobile [...]

  • Nuance

Spent time yesterday with $NUAN – company is very well-positioned in two major growth markets – Healthcare and Wireless.  This on top of their solid presence in core enterprise telecom/speech recognition market.  Good example of my ‘Taking the Next Hill’ theory. Liked what I heard – added some shares in my own account.

  • Should $RIMM sell?
Posted by Chris Selland on November 5th, 2009 at 9:46 am, Comments: 0

Lively debate going on this morning regarding whether it’s time for $RIMM to find a buyer, as Dan Frommer argues that they have become an enterprise dinosaur in an increasingly consumer-driven market.  So should they sell? As I argued here recently, $GOOG is rapidly ascending and $AAPL has quickly become the leader in attention if [...]

  • Taking the Next Hill (reposted from SiliconANGLE)
Posted by Chris Selland on November 2nd, 2009 at 2:12 pm, Comments: 0

I posted this earlier today (actually late last week, but it went live this morning…) on SiliconANGLE, where I write on technology trends. It’s a ‘big picture’ post but much of this thinking was catalyzed by $SAP’s miss last week.  And I’d love to hear thoughts from this community as well. For the original post, [...]

  • Juniper attacks Cisco
Posted by Chris Selland on October 30th, 2009 at 10:03 am, Comments: 0

Fair amount of chatter about the announcements from $JNPR yesterday, but traders seem unimpressed. My opinion?  Juniper’s announcements are fine – nothing wrong with having a unified strategy and story.  Also a smart move by $JNPR to position themselves as the alternative to $CSCO – effectively marginalizing $STAR, $TLAB and others. They probably weren’t big [...]

  • SAP lowers guidance
Posted by Chris Selland on October 28th, 2009 at 8:37 am, Comments: 0

Can’t say I’m at all surprised this morning at the news out of $SAP. The enterprise software market has been mature and consolidating for years – $SAP has ridden it out as the high-end market leader in what has basically become a two-horse race between $SAP & $ORCL.  However, given worldwide economic weakness, increasing corporate [...]

  • Is $AAPL ‘closing down’ the smartphone market?
Posted by Chris Selland on October 27th, 2009 at 4:35 pm, Comments: 0

Read an interesting post from Ultimi Barbarorum musing on whether $AAPL is ‘closing down’ the smartphone market. I doubt it. Clearly as I mentioned the other day, $AAPL is hitting on all cylinders right now.   But you could also argue (I would) that it’s priced for perfection. Yes $RIMM is badly wounded and $PALM is [...]
